Broadening Horizons – Enriching Curriculum
BROADENING HORIZONS – ENRICHING CURRICULUM
The aim of the innovative Hillcroft Oxygen programme is to broaden, add value and extend the student learning experience. A further aim is to raise aspirations and achievement. Hillcroft is not just a place to study, it is a supportive community which aims to help students achieve academic excellence while preparing them for higher education and employment. To achieve this Hillcroft offers a broad curriculum.
The Oxygen programme is devised and developed to reflect the Curriculum Plan and mission of the college, so that students can make links between the higher level skills gained on formal programmes and the wider skills required for a successful life. Students are encouraged to get involved in activities that enhance their main course of study, to allow them to reflect and to make new contacts. As the world increasingly looks for people with a wide range of skills and interests, the activities that we offer enable students to further develop wider social and academic skills.
The Oxygen programme (2007-8) delivered a wide range of experiences including:
- critical thinking/debating:
A series of seminars discussing belief systems, and general politics. - maths doctor:
A supportive teaching environment, designed to take the fear out of studying maths and give further support to timetabled classes. - psychology workshop:
Additional academic support for a complex academic subject. Focusing on critical responses to questions.
healthy living and body awareness/stress management/tai chi Strategies to encourage students to take responsibility for their own health and how to cope with stress.
